Back in 1963 when synthesizers and electronic music were strictly the refuge of academic professors, Morton Subotnick played Don Buchla's Music Box on his experimental album 'Silver Apples Of The Moon', and put electronic music firmly in the imagination of the public. The grandfather of electronic music and his non-traditional approach to pitch and timbre has been influencing sound design and installations ever since.

Born 1974 in Edinburgh. Chris Douglas – aka O.S.T. / Rook Vallard / Dalglish grew up in San Francisco and began studying piano at age 8. Released first EP on Detroit based Switch Records in 1992. Founded Qlipothic Records in 1996. He has created a large body of work, a highly textured and confrontational take on traditional forms of electronic dance music.

With initial releases and early formative years spent in Detroit and San Francisco, he acquired several high profile fans such as Autechre who had him support their 2001 ‘Confield’ tour of North America, then later brought him to Europe to play their curated ATP festival, where he has remained since.

The digital only version of ‘Benacah Drann Deachd’, his latest release has been receiving some of his most eager reception to date, with a full page review in the June issue of the Wire:

“Chris Douglas haunts his own music. A nomad and something of a loner, he has rattled around the electronic music network like a busted component for the last decade and a half [...] It’s appropriate, because his music is one of the most striking evocations of the life of the mind that you’re ever likely to hear. Dr. Bernie Krause, creator of Wild Sanctuary, demonstrates that every living organism produces sound. This presentation focuses on the symbiotic ways in which the sounds of one organism affect and interrelate with other organisms, local and regional, within a given habitat.

Learn about unusual soundscapes and their relevance to preserving natural sounds worldwide. Biophony--the notion that all sounds in undisturbed natural habitats fit into unique niches--will be used to illustrate the ways in which animals taught humans to dance and sing.

Bernie Krause
Since 1968, Dr. Bernie Krause has traveled the world recording and archiving the sounds of creatures and environments large and small. Working at the research sites of Jane Goodall (Gombe, Tanzania), Biruta Galdikas (Camp Leakey, Borneo), and Dian Fossey (Karisoke, Rwanda), he identified the concept of biophony (a/k/a The Niche Hypothesis) based on the relationships of individual creatures to the total biological soundscape within a given habitat.

Dr. Krause was Scientific Director (appointed by NOAA) of the operation that rescued Humphrey the humpback whale from the Sacramento Delta (1985) using processed feeding sounds of the same species to lure him to the ocean. Through his company, Wild Sanctuary, he has recorded over 50 natural soundscape CDs, and creates interactive environmental sound sculpture commissions for museums and other public spaces throughout the world.

Utilizing proprietary delivery technology, his sound sculpture commissions can be heard at the American Museum of Natural History (Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC), the Houston Museum of Natural Science, the Chicago Science Museum, the Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center (near Mystic, CT), the California Academy of Sciences, the Flint River Center in Albany, Georgia, Natural World Museum (SF), and five new installations at the World Financial Center (NYC opening 6 October 2006). Krause is currently commissioned to prepare a series of tropical and sub-tropical rainforest installations for the new California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park scheduled to open in the Fall of 2008.

During his life as a professional studio musician, he replaced Pete Seeger in the Weavers (1963), and with his late music partner, Paul Beaver, introduced the synthesizer to pop music and film. Their work can be heard on over 250 albums and 135 feature films released between 1967 and 1980

The second episode in the series looks at the use of formal systems in the composition and performance of musical works. It explains the diversity of approaches to musical systems using a range of technologies and processes. The episode asks how we might distinguish systems based procedures in music to other musical activities, and makes reference to technological development and implementation, structural complexity, and relationships to other musical traditions. We compare three tape-based approaches to composition that explore sound as a temporal and spatial phenomenon and refer to theoretical positions offered by notable artists working in this field.

Written by Stephen Sharp and Roc Jiménez de Cisneros, 'RAVE SLIME' is a double blow of brutalist composition and raw electronic music. The 12" revisits the classic hoover sound [1] in a Radical Computer Music [2] style, that moves it away from any kind of foreseeable dance floor. The hoover sound, popularized by many rave music productions since the early nineties, comes from a preset patch for the Roland Juno Alpha synthesizer called "What The?", engineered by Eric Persing in 1986 after he became Chief Sound Designer for the Roland Corporation [3].

Although the two sides of 'RAVE SLIME' stem from the same idea, they were composed using different methods: a digital synthesizer and custom-written generative software. True to the computer music for hooligans motto that has been behind EVOL since the late nineties, the record approaches the iconic "What The?" sawtooth frenzy through various structural devices. Side A features orderly, ascending-descending note arrays to build a superposition of monolithic waves, while side AA (developed from an installation exploring multistability [4]) uses symmetry-breaking lattices that create a mesh of self-similar patterns.

[3] "When the Roland MSQ700 (the first MIDI sequencer) was introduced, no-one at Roland could figure out how to use it. Because of all the time we had at the store, we figured out a lot of weird tricks. Like if you played the parts from a Jupiter 6 and powered up the MSQ700 last in the MIDI chain, you could get a multitimbral, multitrack sequence playing. I know that doesn't sound like a big deal now, but at the time it was pretty mind-blowing. So we put these awesome demos together with every instrument in the entire store MIDI'd together. Anyway, Roland started sending their employees down to our store to get trained on their own gear by us. Tom Beckman (then President of Roland US) came down to see what was going on, and I gave him the big demo and he dug it. He asked me to demo at the '84 NAMM show and then I was in." 'Continue' investigates how music can be generated using a wide range of techniques. These range from very simple procedural systems, such as Mika Vainio's 'Twin Bleebs' which features two repeating events going in and out of phase, to David Tudor's 'Neural Synthesis No.9' – a more complex electronic system which explores indeterminacy through the emulation of neural activity. The programme also looks at music which has been composed using formal geometric and mathematical rules, for example: Martin Neukom's 'Studie 18' and Thomas Brinkmann's '27 Fibonacci Numbers in a Binary Chain'.

EVOL is a computer music group started in 1996. At the core of the project is Roc Jiménez de Cisneros, an artist and composer living and working in Barcelona. Since the late nineties, Roc Jiménez de Cisneros and his collaborators have been producing what they call "computer music for hooligans", inspired by fractal geometry, quantum theory and rave culture. A vortex of generative basslines, air horns, strangely familiar vocalisations and noise, their music displays a radical and playful approach to algorithmic composition. Their work has been published on international record labels like Entr'acte, Mego, Presto!? or their own ALKU.
